2. The Pharisees and Sadducees were referred to by John the Baptist as “vipers” which is not very complimentary to them. Of course they had earned this remark by their beliefs, actions, and treatment of other people and were certainly deserving of John’s statement. The Pharisees and Sadducees had apparently responded to John’s call for repentance in verse two. In the second half of verse seven John states “who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?” Although some Christians think that the “wrath” John spoke about is still future even to us today, it is obvious to this web site author that the message John spoke was directly to the Pharisees and Sadducees John was speaking to and the “wrath” was to directly affect them in their generation. This happened in AD 70 in the destruction of Jerusalem.
4. Luke 11:50 and 51 tell us that the blood [death] of those in the generation to whom Jesus was speaking would be required in their lifetime because they had not listened to nor heeded what the prophets of the Bible had told them.
6. Jesus told His disciples that “some” of them would not die before Jesus came back with His angels to reward (judge) the people and bring in His kingdom.
8. Jesus told the people and His disciples (see Chapter 20:45) that they needed to “watch….and pray” so that they could escape (see Learning Activities 44 and 45) all the things that Jesus had just stated would take place in their generation. The things that would take place are described in Luke 21:6–35.
10. The apostle Paul said that some of the believing Thessalonians, to whom he was writing, would still be alive at the coming of the Lord.
12. Paul tells the Corinthians that the time of some important event is “short.”
14. The writer of the book of Hebrews is saying that the Lord would be coming back in a “little while” and that He “will not tarry.”
16. Paul is instructing Timothy to remain faithful until Jesus comes again. The inference here is that “the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ” would take place in Timothy’s lifetime.
