LEARNING ACTIVITY #22

When the Bible is read and studied, we find that there are a number of names for God which are used repetitively and others that are used but once or twice in the Scriptures. Some of these "names" are even figurative language (which will be more fully explained in a later Learning Activity), such as God being referred to as "a sure foundation" (Isaiah 28:16), "the door" (John 10:7), or even "the day star" (2 Peter 1:19).

Being familiar with this extensive list of the biblical names for God will help you in your reading and studying of the Scriptures and will assist you in growing in your understanding of your relationship in God.

A caution on understanding the names of God: Some religions and groups build their belief system around just one of the names on the list. I hope you can see from the list that this is just not a good thing to do. Each name is meant to convey something about the character or attributes of God and an understanding of each contributes to a more complete understanding of the total character of God.

In addition, because there are multiple names in no way implies that there is more than one true God as we have already seen from Learning activities #1 through #4. There is but ONE true God!
