Christians Are In Christ

Many significant things happen to a person when they become a Christian. Using your Bible, look up the following verses and write them in the space provided. As you proceed answer the questions as they appear.

1. 1 Corinthians 12:13

In the above verse, we see that at the moment of our believing in Christ we are baptized (placed into) the body of Christ. The Koine Greek word here for “baptized” is a form of the word “baptizo” which means to be immersed into something and the something in this case is the spiritual body of Christ! Some Christians think that the baptism being spoken of here is water baptism but that is not the case. This spiritual action takes place due to the Spirit of God placing us into His body (see the content of this verse).

2. Galatians 3:27

3. Romans 6:3

4. What truth is declared in both of the verses in #2 and #3 above?

5. Colossians 1:18

The word “he” in the above verse is referring to Christ. We can tell this is so by the content of the entire passage, and in particular from verse thirteen.

6. Ephesians 5:23

When Christ was here on earth in a physical body that was provided by God through the virgin Mary, Jesus was referred to as Jesus of Nazareth. After His death, resurrection and ascension, Jesus came back in spirit only (not as Jesus of Nazareth) and now indwells all believers and they are in Him. This reciprocal indwelling of He in us and we in Him is possible because we are talking about something that exists in the spirit realm. In the physical realm reciprocal indwelling would be impossible (two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time), but in the spirit realm this is not a problem. Jesus at the present time is Spirit as He has been throughout most of eternity. His present body, the church, is a spiritual body.

7. In review, how is it that Christians are in Christ?

The understanding of being in Christ and Christ being in the believer is one of the most often repeated truths in the Bible. This truth can be found by looking in the Scriptures for such phrases as “in Christ,” “in him,” “in God,” “in the Lord,” etc.

In my communication with Christians about this truth via this web site I have found that many are not properly understanding the complete impact of this truth on their Christianity. The misunderstanding seems to imply that being “in Christ” is something akin to: (1) believing what Christ has taught, (2) being part of some special interest such as we would consider being a member of a club or organization, (3) or having an interest in some lifelong hobby where we would study, practice, and devote lots of time. This totally denies the miraculous impact that is part of our present lives due to this event taking place in us.

Additional study and contemplation is required to fully realize that we were spiritually dead to God and the spirit realm until we believed and Christ, spiritually came to indwell our dead spirits and brought it alive to God and the spiritual realm. So awesome was this event that the Bible states that we have become a “new creation in Christ.”

Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

The following is a listing of scriptures that I have discovered that illustrate this great truth. You will benefit by renewing your mind to this truth by reading each of the following from your Bible!
