Learning Activity 3A

How Do We Know There is a God

The Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the Bible was used in this Learning Activity.

If you think I am going to prove to you that there IS a God, you are mistaken. Since God says He is a Spirit and part of the unseen world there is no one and no way that His presence can be proven as fact without exercising faith and some common sense. I have concluded that He has set things up in this manner so that He will only be revealed to those who are diligently and honestly seeking Him.

1. Hebrews 11:6 ________________________________________________________________________________________

2. In order to prove there is a God, what actions does the verse above state are necessary? ___________
_______________________________________________________________________________________

On the other hand this same reasoning thwarts all efforts by Atheists from ever proving there is no God! Of course for them it will be the biggest mistake of their non-eternal lives if they are wrong! If it were not that way there would be droves of people who would profess to “love Him” for no other reason than an insurance policy “just in case.” This is NOT the kind of relationship God seeks to have with any individual.

3. Romans 1:20 __________________________________________________________________________

4. In a condensed statement, what does the verse above tell us about coming to know God? ___________
________________________________________________________________________________________

I have come to know the above process as an “evidence based decision.” What this means to me is that there is ample evidence of God about us every day that testifies to His existence. Let’s look at some of this evidence.

With respect to the human body which those who do not believe in a God tell us evolved from some obscure origin of what amounts to a single cell emerging from an ancient puddle of slime to become what we are today. See if any of the following fits that understanding!

A. The acids in our stomach are strong enough that they can dissolve a razor blade and even digest the stomach itself. The body renews the stomach lining every three to four days preventing this digestion of the stomach.

B. In thirty minutes the body producers enough heat to boil a half gallon of water!

C. Our eyes together weigh approximately 56 grams and can produce 36,000 bits of information each hour.

D. The brain consists of approximately 100 billion neurons (brain cells) and each is connected to at least 10,000 other neurons giving well over 500 trillion connections in the brain!

E. The hypothalamus is about the size of the tip of your thumb, weighs about four grams and regulates homeostasis, thirst, body temperature, water balance, hunger, and blood pressure!

F. There are over ten million cone and rod cells in the retina of the eye packed together at a density of 200,000/square millimeter in the fovea centralis. Each of these minute photoreceptor cells is vastly more complex than our most sophisticated computer!

G. Our lungs contain about 600 million tiny air sacs called alveoli and have 750 woven miles of blood vessels. If flattened out the lungs would cover about 1,000 square feet! Your left lung is smaller than the right lung to provide space for the heart.

H. One brain cell can hold five times as much information as an encyclopedia!

I. Three hundred million cells die in the human body every minute!

J. Isn’t it amazing that there just happens to be a “cage” of protective ribs surrounding our heart and lungs!

K. Our skin, the largest of our body organs,

provides both a physical and a chemical barrier shielding blood vessels, nerves, muscles, and bones. When cuts or tears in the skin provide an entrance for infective agents, glands beneath the skin produce an enzyme that helps kill bacteria!

L. Within our bodies we have an immune system that recognizes and destroys foreign substances and organisms that enter our body. The immune system can distinguish between the body’s own tissues and outside substances called antigens. This allows cells of the immune system “army” to identify and destroy only those “enemy” antigens. The ability to identify an antigen also permits the immune system to remember antigens the body has been exposed to in the past so that the body can mount a better and faster immune response the next time any of these antigens show up!

The white blood cells (lymphocytes) that develop in bone marrow attach themselves to the invader antigens and surround and digest the infected cells or microorganisms. Each time a new kind of antigen invades the body, the immune system must produce a new set of cells which attack ONLY the antigen. It is estimated that the immune system can create more than 100 million types of antibodies. That my friend is what I call a miracle!

The above list could go on but I think I have proven my point,

5. When you consider the above scientific “evidence” about the human body, do you think it points to evolution from a slime puddle or a creator God? ______________________________________________

With respect to the human body just about every item you might mention displays some degree, and in many cases an amazing ability to rejuvenate itself. The only exception seems to be the teeth!

The scripture we looked at in Item #3, Romans 1:20, stated that God could be found in His creation. If so, see if you can make a list of how you might perceive God in nature itself as a personal project.

How about a list of how God can be seen in the universe around us?

Even the environment “heals” over time! The most dramatic example of this in my thinking is how those portions of the earth that were at one time at the bottom of the salty ocean are now being used as fertile fields for growing food for humanity. This, to me, is one of the greatest “miracles” in my midst!

So, whether a person happens to be under the influence of someone who previously told them about any one of the “theories” of evolution listed below, I believe my short writing on this subject should give them cause for concern over their man-generated belief.

Man descended from apes.

Darwin’s evolution theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest.

Inanimate organisms evolve into animate organisms and on to human beings.

Evolution through violent catastrophic events.

The above list of “speculative theories” could also go on, but NONE can be PROVEN!
